Do "faces" scare you?

If beginning doll makers voted what "scared" them the most, the overwhelming answer is the "face"! At our last meeting on 8 October, we went back to basics and drew and coloured some cloth doll faces - a great exercise for new and more experienced doll makers alike.

There is nothing like practice to improve one's face drawing techniques, but here is an introduction to a video by renowned doll maker Patti Culea. This video and Patti's books are highly recommended by Gumnut Dollies Newcastle.

Gumnut Giveaways in Newcastle

At Gumnut Dollies Newcastle, we are furiously working to make giveaway gifts for visitors to our stand at the Newcastle Stitches and Craft Show, 18-21  August. It was great to see the progress today at our meeting.  Thanks to the many members who have made such a fantastic contribution. It was also lovely today to welcome three new doll makers to our group. Hope to see you all in August.

We will be celebrating one year since the amalgamation of Hello Dollies and Gumnutters on 12 August with a special dinner - ladies'night out! On the next day, at our usual August meeting, we will be unveiling the Colour Challenge dolls. The Colour Challenge is a doll making challenge where each of the participants bring a small piece of fabric in a set number of colours. Then all the fabrics are placed in individual colour bags. Each participant then blindly chooses two bags of fabrics and is challenged to make a doll using the fabrics in the bags chosen. Looking forward to seeing what these doll makers come up with...

Biggest Morning Tea with Gumnut Dollies

How can you have so much fun and help a good cause ? Gumnut Dollies Newcastle on 26 May gave it its best shot at its Biggest Morning Tea .... scrumptious morning tea, a raffle where everyone gets a prize, trivia questions and a "Guess who"? photo competition  and fantastic show and tell.

The star of the show and tell  was Wendy's beautiful doll made at the Marlaine Verhelst workshop .... congratulations, Wendy A - such excellence!
Our group show and tell to celebrate the Biggest Morning Tea was a display of handmade items related to the domestic arts. What a magnificent and nostalgic display it was - exquisitely embroidered doilies, table cloths and tray cloths, whimsical pot holders, practical and decorative aprons, novelty pincushions and tape measure holders, woolly tea cosies  and so much more. So lovely to see the hand stitched and embroidered garments of a young Ann - probably from her school days when she was only 10 or 12!

Our next meeting will be 11 June when we will be preparing little giveaway dolls for our first stand at the Stitches and Craft Show in August, and making some gleatine printing plates in preparation for a workshop with visiting doll artist from Western Australia, Linda Misa.
Always happy to see some new faces , so come and join us!

An Ace of Jesters

Not a single April fool amongst the Gumnut Dollies group! At out last meeting, we had a theme of "Clowns, Fools and Jesters". Our fun creative activity was to make a little jester.  Connie and I had a sewing morning and made the components of these little jesters from elinor peace bailey's pattern in "Pick Pockets Wearables".  The first one I made was made with the arms, legs and bodt all from the same fabric, but we thought, why not, in true epb style, just make lots of arms and legs and bodies, and allow everyone to either "mix and match"  or just "match".
Here's the result - most tried the "anything goes" approach with colourful success!
If you are thinking "that looks like fun", and  you would love to have a go, please come and join us at our monthly "get togethers" at the Newcastle Girl Guide Hall, Henry Park, Thomas Street, Hamilton South (Newcastle) 10am on the second Saturday of the month. Here's Jane with her first every little pin doll.

Next meeting on 14 May will be "The Biggest Morning Tea " - a fundraiser for the Cancer Council.
Please bring for "show and tell" something handmade , celebrating the domestic arts - for example, a tea cosy,a pot holder, an apron, am embroidered doily or tea tray cloth ....... ?

February Fun Day

Exquisite embroidered and beaded  fairy and elf shoes by Jackie - watch for these in Vicki's cabinet in Morpeth in March.
While quite a few of the Gumnut Dollies members were enjoying the 40th birthday celebrations of Anne's Glory Box at the beautiful Aanuka Resort in Coffs Harbour, some carried on regardless at our February meeting. It was designated a 'broken jewellery' day, but as I didn't stay beyond noon, my report on that is missing, but what a fantastic "show and tell" again.
A myriad of pot mitts by Dolores

Gamarna and her hand dyed fabric ready to create a garment for a "space" themed event.

Paper clay sculpture by Bobbi and a stitched book by Wilma

Statuesque sculptures by Bobbi

Beautiful embroidered dolls in progress by Wendy A.

Wendy showed us her lovely 'doll" pendant for the jewellery theme.
We also decided on our next challenge - to be ready for the August birthday meeting.... It will be a colour challenge - more details coming, And Dolores is pursuing the idea of a pin doll swap with another doll group.
