Hello Dollies' Conversation with Olivia Parsonage, Textile Artist

Hello Dollies  members were delighted to meet Olivia Parsonage and her textile art at the May meeting. It was lovely to see some samples of Olivia's work and hear about her current preparation for her exhibition later this year.

For those who didn't get the opportunity to meet Olivia, here is some information
Olivia Parsonage is an illustrator, sculptor and fabric artist. She completed a Diploma of Fine Art at Hornsby TAFE in 1998 and Bachelor of Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle in 2009. She has previously exhibited in Sydney at Hornsby TAFE and Eden Gardens and in the Newcastle region at Watt Space Gallery, John Paynter Gallery, PODspace gallery, Newcastle Art Space and Maitland Town Hall.

Olivia Parsonage explores the potential of fabric as an illustrative tool. Although the technique is quite precise, the rambling comes from the imagery that evolves through the sewing process. The background of patchwork fabric informs how the surface layers will develop, creating the texture and atmosphere for the narrative.

Olivia's most recent fabric illustrations capture her quirky sense of the absurdity of everyday living. There is a silent narrative to each piece that can be found while enjoying the sinister undertones sewn into each of the works. They are influenced by childhood tales of monsters and folklore fears of nature and animals and everyday moments that make up our human existence. (from http://curvegallery.com/?page_id=557)
The Walking Thread, Olivia’s exhibition, in 2014, explored the potential of soft sculpture and  textile art installation, adding another voice to her narrative.  Olivia is currently working on extending the installation for an exhibition in Maitland Regional Art Gallery , opening in September 2015.
Thank you, Olivia for visiting us at Dollies and best wishes for your upcoming exhibition. We'll all be there, for sure!
