Christmas at Hello Dollies

What a wonderful Christmas party we all enjoyed at Hello Dollies on 19 December - a Santa gift swap, a fabric challenge, a great show and tell of favourite 2009 dolls, a special surpirse for Fay from the Sydney Dollies, a beautiful lunch (thanks Gloria), the annual Christmas sale at Anne's Glory Box, and of course, a really special time to share with friends.

Christmas Dollies

Make sure you have the Hello Dollies Christmas Party on Saturday 19 December in Newcastle not only in your diary but on your mind over the next ten days.... The gift swap theme is "Santa" - no bigger than 6inches(15cm) - it can be something handmade, bought, recycled or altered!  Do you remember the border print fabric we received at Christmas in July in Sydney? As you can see from the photo above  . my piece is in pristine condition - just as it was folded neatly away on 25July. We are challenged to do something creative with this fabric, so hope you have been working harder on yours than I have on mine - no worries, still all next week to go!
Here are some photos from last year - just to remind you what a fantastic time is enjoyed by all and to encourage you to come along for fun, laughter, good food, creative support and inspiration.
Looking forward to seeing Dollies friends from Newcastle and Sydney at the party.
Best wishes

October Little Art Dolls

I forgot to take my camera to Hello Dollies last week, so the only photo of what we did is a photo of the little art doll I made. If anyone else from Newcastle or Sydney Dollies has taken photos, please email  them to me so I can update this blog. For those of you who weren't there, it was again another fun day. Fay King had made a couple of samples of these art dolls for us  - a design by Sharon Mann, first seen by Sydney Dolly , Fay Bowen in BeadUnique, Fall 2005. These little dolls can be made with pieces of fabric or paper, and just let your imagination go wild with embellishment. There were really a lot of others made on the day which were better than mine. I originally started with a button for the head, but it just wouldn't stay there, so I replaced it with a stamped polymer clay face bead.
Some reminders - Fay is now collecting Christmas dolls (and other goodies) for gifts to be given to Centacare. Christmas will soon be here and the last Dollies for the year, the Christmas Dollies, will be in Newcastle on Saturday 19 December. The swap gift will be a Santa (maximum size : 6 inches/15cm).
Did you also remember the Christmas  border print we received as a gift in  July - what about leaving a comment on this blog about what you have done/intend to do with it before the December meeting?
To all those going on holidays in November, have a great time.
best wishes,
PS Almost forgot - keep working on your ideas for the Oriental Dancer challenge.

Felt Teddy Bear with Marilyn

Many thanks to Marilyn Halcomb and Fay Bowen who travelled from Sydney for the September Newcastle Hello Dollies meeting last Saturday. Marilyn showed us how to needle felt a little teddy bear . It was great fun, and we all finished the day with most of the teddy bear parts felted in various colours and sizes, but all looking fantastic.  If only I had taken a video of the action!

We had as usual a wonderful show and tell, including  beautiful items from the recent Maitland  Embroiderers' Guild Exhibition , Fay's absolutely  exquisite wedding accessories,  professional photo books, crazy patchwork , stunning dolls and even toadskin leather. Congratulations to all .

Best wishes to Bobbi who is not feeling well and to Connie who spent the weekend at the Sydney Eye Hospital having on operation on a torn retina. We all missed you on Saturday and wish you both a speedy recovery so you can return to your creative pursuits soon.

Help - Dolls Past and Future

Is anyone able to help please? One of our Hello Dollies members has "uncovered" a doll which she thinks belonged to her grandmother. Any information about this type of doll would be much appreciated. This was not the original dress, and while the marking is not very clear, perhaps someone will recognise it. Please leave a comment if you can provide some information.
I had the great pleasure of working today with a student who is putting the finishing touches to her doll - a major work for the Higher School Certificate. We met at the Hello Dollies July meeting in Sydney, and it was great to see the doll come to life today. Not so much help was needed, just a boost of confidence - all the best for the HSC from Hello Dollies.

Hello Dollies is 15 Years Young.

A few heads turned as six of us Newcastle Dollies, dressed in our best pink finery, boarded the 6.30am train at Broadmeadow station bound for the Hello Dollies' 15th Birthday celebrations in Sydney last Saturday. What a party it was - a significant birthday for the group, combined with the usual Christmas in July celebration at the Sydney meeting. It was a very special occasion for all of us, but especially for Gloria and Fay and for three of our Sydney members who have been attending Hello Dollies for 15 years. Gloria (Anne's Glory Box) has been Hello Dollies' facilitator, believing in "cloth dolls" when they were literally in their infancy in Australia. Gloria has organised, financed and hosted numerous visits from international tutors, workshops, seminars, symposium events and overseas educational tours. We are fortunate indeed to have been the beneficiaries of Gloria's foresight. It is hard to believe that Fay has driven from Newcastle to Sydney each month for Dollies for so long - that is dedication. If that weren't sufficient in itself, Fay has each month for 15 years, conducted the Newcastle and Sydney meetings, organised demonstrations and activities, sourced interesting patterns, written the newsletters, devised challenges, organised rosters, listened to umpteen "show and tell" sessions, and generally encouraged, taught, and inspired us in our doll making. Congratulations and thanks to both of you! We , of course, enjoyed a fabulous pink birthday cake . However, it wouldn't be a Dollies occasion without lots of good shopping ( thanks, Gloria for the birthday discount), interesting show and tell, swapping beautiful handmade gifts, catching up with old and new friends, and of course more fantastic food! Thanks to Sydney Dollies for hosting such a great day!

Just a note : We all received a Christmas border print as a gift - Fay is hoping to see some innovative creations made with this print at the Christmas party in December in Newcastle.
It's also now official that Ann Maullin's pattern, Oriental Dance is the challenge doll for February 2010. Any Asian costume may be used - that's the challenge.

Ann Maullin- Oriental Dance

Hello Dollies went "east" for the June Meetings. The very talented Ann Maullin showed us her techniques to create her latest beautiful doll - Oriental Dance. Inspired by some exquisite Chinese silk prints of Oriental dancers, Ann created this elegant cloth doll , using some simple techniques to achieve movement and grace. We were all fascinated to learn that this is a stump doll, and with some simple but clever techniques in sewing the body, such fluid lines were created. Many thanks for sharing your techniques with us, Ann - what a great tutorial for both experienced and new doll makers . Was there a whisper that Oriental Dance might be a good idea for another "Hello Dollies" challenge in the future ? However, I do know that those stunning Chinese silk prints are Gloria's inspiration for a richly embellished quilt ... watch this space...

A reminder to all - it's party time in July in Sydney. Celebrate Hello Dollies 15th birthday and Christmas in July on 25 July. Please make sure it is marked in your diary. I think there will be a group from Newcastle going down on the train ... arrangements can be made on 18 July at the Newcastle meeting. Please also bring the special party surprises you are making to that meeting. or drop them in to Fay at the shop before 25 July.

Thanks ... see you all at Dollies, Wilma
