GUMNUT DOLLIES NEWCASTLE is a group of creative doll makers, using a variety of different media. We warmly welcome new members and visitors. Our dolls range from the naive to sculpted art dolls created with cloth, clay, found objects and much more. We meet on the second Saturday of the month and are based in Newcastle, Australia. Our group has its beginnings with HELLO DOLLIES a doll makers' group established by Anne's Glory Box and GUMNUTTERS, a group of like minded doll enthusiasts.
The first meeting in 2018 of Gumnut Dollies Newcastle will be on Saturday 10 February, 10am - 2pm at The Girl Guides Centre, Thomas Street, Hamilton South ( Newcastle) . For updates, please comment below or visit our Facebook Group page
When asked what do you do at Gumnut Dollies Newcastle , we often say anything and everything.... We are a doll making group, but we are also interested in many different sewing, sculpting, textile art and mixed media techniques which we can use to make and embellish dolls of all sorts, shapes and sizes. A usual meeting might start off with 'show and tell' where members and guests display current or past work or work in progress. This is a really inspirational part of the meeting where many ideas are shared... the September 2017 meeting was no exception.
At most meetings, we have a mini workshop or creative activity. Last month we made little flower fairy dolls. This activity was let by Marg, who had prior to the meeting made up little kits for us all to use, so usually, members need to bring very little to participate in the activity
At most meetings there is an exchange of ideas, techniques, and even giveaways and swaps from each other's stashes of fabric and embellishments . Sharing ideas and techniques happens from within the group and often we have special guests with special expertise and goodies to share.
Of course, we also have a beautiful morning tea and lunch, provided by members - we have not ever gone hungry at any meeting in the history of the group.
Throughout the year, we also set challenges for ourselves . We agree on a theme, and create with the theme in mind. This year, we had the "Inspired by May Gibbs" theme. Past challenges have included "Raggedy Anne's 100th Birthday" , "Story book characters" and "Tea cup ladies"
Once a year , we try to host a weekend or three day workshop with an experienced doll maker. We have been very fortunate to have had both Australian an overseas tutors.
There are other special community events we participate in - we can be seen at the Stitches and Craft Show in Newcastle most years and supporting community charities especially around the Christmas season.
Most of all we have fun and enjoy one another's company... why don't you join us? We meet on the second Saturday of every month - the next meeting is 14 October 2017.
